Mike
Szydlowski brings 27 years of experience in science
education, leadership, and professional development and is committed to making
science more accessible for teachers and engaging for students. Mike has served as a Science Curriculum
Specialist and District Science Coordinator, leading science education for over
19,000 students and 550 teachers across 32 schools in Missouri for 18
years. In these roles, he developed and analyzed curriculum and assessments
for K-12 students and teachers. In
addition, Mike developed new programs and professional development that
transformed science in the districts where he led the science
departments.
Mike’s
leadership extends beyond his district roles. He has served as president of the Science
Teachers of Missouri, providing professional development and advocacy and
organizing statewide science education conferences.
As a
dedicated professional, Mike has garnered numerous accolades, including the
Missouri Master Conservationist Award (2022), and multiple Educator of the Year
honors from various organizations. His
work in conservation education has earned recognition at the local and state
levels. A passionate advocate for
place-based education, he increased science achievement and excitement by
connecting learning to the community to gain relevance and meaning. Mike
also developed the country’s largest place-based science trip program, bringing
immersive science experiences to over 12,000 students.
Mike is
dedicated to fostering a lifelong curiosity about the natural world in students
and educators alike. His visionary
leadership, combined with his ability to create meaningful connections between
curriculum and real-world applications, has impacted thousands of students and
teachers. As he continues to consult,
write, and lead, Mike remains committed to driving innovation in science
education and empowering the next generation of learners to explore, question,
and discover.
